KITCHEN

A woman is making a pie. She’s kneading the dough. The courtyard is visible through the kitchen window. The woman covers the dough with a dishcloth; she’s wearing a kerchief.

– What do I know about love…
…my whole life I’ve loved only one man…
…in fact, I don’t even know if I loved him.

The woman clears the table and begins to slice an onion.

– I guess I did…

There are tears in her eyes… from the onion.

She rolls out the dough paper thin, sprinkles the potatoe and onion filling across the layer of dough, rolls up the dough and filling into a long thin roll, cuts the roll into shorter lengths, fashions the lengths into spirals, arranges the spirals in a shallow pan.

Two girls are standing in the kitchen doorway. They’re sisters. They just stand and listen, and then they’re gone.

The woman slides the pan into the oven.

– What do I know about love…

She wipes off the table and looks through the window into the courtyard.

COURTYARD – GARAGE

A man in a blue blazer swings open the garage doors. The doors are blue, too. At his side is a man in coveralls, blue. He is a young auto-mechanic. The car in the garage is white and clean.

The young auto mechanic opens the hood of the car.
The man in the blue blazer unfolds a chair and sits next to the car.
The young auto mechanic rolls up the sleeves of his blue coveralls and begins to tinker with the engine.

– Now let’s just see what’s wrong.
– There’s nothing for you to see what’s wrong, I already told you what’s wrong.
– You just need to fix it and keep quiet.

The man in the blue blazer lights a cigarette.

The young auto mechanic, still bent over the engine, silently makes the repairs.

COURTYARD – WATER SPIGOT

The sisters are standing at the outdoor spigot looking in the direction of the garage. Water flows from the spigot.

– They killed his brother because of him…
– Yeah, they killed because of him, they thought it was him.
– They say things heated up in the bar because of some woman. I don’t believe…
– Me neither, it had to be because of cards or drink…

They turn away and continue fixing their hair.

– but you’re not supposed to talk about that…

They turn off the spigot and run to the house.

HOUSE – LARGE ROOM

The sisters stand at the doorway. They stand and watch.

In the room, a man in pajamas is sitting on the couch, searching for a station on the radio.

– Maybe it’s better they killed him, because he would have died of longing for her…
– …and anyway, she was already dead.

The man stops. Only static is heard on the radio. A woman in a nightgown is sitting next to him.

He has his arms around her.

Her head rests on his shoulder. She is quiet, her eyes are closed. He kisses her. His hand is on her stomach. He gives her a glass of milk. She drinks it from his hands with closed eyes.

A melody emerges from the radio static.

The woman opens her eyes. She slowly stands and then runs from the room.

A song is heard on the radio.

HOUSE – SALOON

The woman in the nightgown enters the empty barroom. Music can be heard. Behind her, in the doorway, the sisters. They stand, eyes closed, humming along.

The woman begins to sing.

“One more time!”

She spins, arms outstretched.

“When the first snow falls
I hitch a pair of horses to my sleigh and ride all day
I hitch a pair of horses to my sleigh and ride all day…”
“I love each and every girl
whether raven, redhead, blond of curl
I love each and every girl…”

The woman falls to the floor. The sisters are gone.

IN FRONT OF THE HOUSE

The sisters are sitting on the front stoop.

– I’ll never get over it…
– …he was so handsome…

They speak in unison.

The young auto mechanic comes to the house gate. He lights a cigarette.

– I only came because of the sisters.
– Even now I don’t know which one I liked bettar.
